Thermoelastic analysis
reveals the sum of
the principal strains whilst photoelastic analysis provides the
difference in principal strains.
Photoelastic coatings are transparent in the visible spectrum and
opaque the infrared spectrum and hence can act as strain witnesses in both
photoelasticity and thermoelasticity.
An integrated sensor (left) can be used to collect both types of data
simultaneously. An example
is shown above for a composite disc specimen subject to biaxial strain across
its diagonals (NE-SW & NW-SE) and thermoelastic data (centre) and
photoelastic data (right) are shown.
